Red Johnsons Chronicles 2 1 DVD

Enjoy both Red Johnson's Chronicles and Red Johnson's Chronicles: One Against All in one exclusive pack!

Red Johnsons Chronicles 1 DVD

In some ways, it was to Red Johnson's Chronicles' benefit that the PSN debacle happened. Originally intended for release way back in April and just now hitting Sony's shaky airwaves, the noir-adventure game is riding a peripheral wave of affection from LA Noire's considerable buzz. Unlike Noire, though, Red Johnson largely only has style going for it, and not substance as well - aside from some occasionally good ideas that are bungled in execution. Like Team Bondi and Rockstar's latest masterpiece, though, Red Johnson succeeds in reimagining the adventure game from a new perspective. It's just that the perspective is too uneven, veering wildly from LucasArts meets Highlights Magazine in its puzzles' logic and then manufacturing a sense of difficulty by strong-arming you into pixel-hunting.

It starts, like so many detective stories, with a body and a freight elevator's worth of suspects. When the most hated guy in town is released from jail and subsequently aced, the stumped cops call upon Red Johnson, a knitted-cap-wearing private dick, to sort it all out. And from the outset, it seems like a promising premise for the game and story alike. There's an almost Venture Bros.-like soundtrack bursting with thunderous pianos, clattering wah-wah guitars, and smoldering horns. The setting, an almost USSR-like reimagining of the United States with gorgeously rendered backdrops brimming with life, is fresh and original.

But then, starting with the first puzzle, familiarity starts to sink in, and it isn't pretty. For example, when thumbing around the crime scene, you can't go anywhere or interact with anything until you track down the security camera that caught the deed on tape. It, of course, is hidden in the shadows - and even cranking up the gamma correction won't reveal it. This is a sign of things to come, as you'll often be groping around like a horny teenager in a rented limo on prom night for nearly microscopic clues as the case unfolds. Bullet casings, ripped sections of fabric, and even bigger items like suitcases conspire against you to stay shrouded in darkness. It makes the flow of investigation downright clunky, since your MO is to scoop up every item not nailed down - this is an adventure game after all - and then bring it back to your HQ to analyze. Literally: there's a machine you use to dump your inventory into to have it be automatically analyzed. Since it's a machine, you're treated to a cutesy loading screen on it, which is presumably meant as a joke but winds up being awful annoying since it's just for show and you have to come to it a lot.

The more sophisticated puzzles are equally unnerving, and fortunately there's a healthy stable of logic puzzles that both make sense and can be solved using brains instead of unending patience to find pixels. Bear in mind, though, these "logic" puzzles are all rather strange, like repairing a homeless man's toilet and stealing a prostitute's clock when she isn't watching. There's enough variety here to keep things spicy, but over time the flavor wears thin. You also have a snitch, Saul, who for a price will drop you a couple of hints. He's the least useful on the extremely complicated puzzles, but it's decent backup. Besides, if you're really stuck, isn't that what Google is for?

There's also an attempt to inject some combat into Red Johnson via some short, thirty-second QTEs that usually occur whenever you sneak into a new location. Miss a single move - which are sometimes randomly generated - and you'll be treated to a gory sequence in which Red Johnson becomes Dead Johnson. These are trifles at best, but true to the impressive sense of presentation evident elsewhere, they're entirely in black and white: goof up and the screen gets smeared in red. Even then, you just get to try again - there are no repercussions for your actions.

Unfortunately, as a crime-adventure game, Red Johnson is absolutely the weakest when interrogating suspects. Not only is the voice acting flat and lifeless, but the whole process is flat-out lame. Red poses true-or-false tests to himself about each suspect ("There were at least ten murderers. There was more than one murder weapon. One of the killers had a flamethrower"). As in the action sequences, if you goof up, you just get to try again immediately. As a result, vigilantly paying attention to what you think are all the relevant details gives way to just wildly guessing at every opportunity, knowing there are no consequences one way or another. And if you think that's thrilling, consider this: The big finale is Red going back to his office and filling out some paperwork on a multiple-choice indictment what's about 50 questions long. Hope you remember exactly what time the murder happened, everyone's alibi, and what each suspect had for lunch.

If Red Johnson wasn't served up with such stylized fanfare, it'd be easy to discount immediately. Although its puzzles are frustrating and lacking in variety, what's all the more frustrating is there are occasional bursts of brilliance here. Alas, they're mostly in the presentation. Given that there's going to be a sequel, hopefully the rest of the game can catch up in part two.

RealMyst Masterpiece Edition 1 DVD

Meet the new RealMyst, a lot like the old Myst - but with vastly improved graphics.

Realms of Arkania Blade of Destiny 1 DVD

Remakes are well and good, but nostalgia is a funny thing; it can have a person weeping at a Bros poster, polishing off their Grolsch bottle tops, and declaring that they wish "1989 never came to pass!", or oppositely, and mostly within the realms of software, it makes you say “we used to play that? Seriously?”.

Due to the ponderous nature of this renovation of RoA:BoD, the RPG sits in that latter category perhaps described best as “why bother?”. In the two decades that have past from classic CRPG to ruinous facelift, tutorials, user interfaces, and workable code have become pretty big things – all of which are alarmingly missing in this adventure.

In no uncertain times, this yesteryear RPG isn't just bad, it's actually broken, suffering some sort of a mental breakdown in the middle of a fantasy tavern, proclaiming itself the "Lizard Queen". This is a stuttering, half finished, mess of game, that if you squint and cock your head to a 42 degree angle you can just about make out the outline of coherent adventure before it starts shouting in German.

And it will start to shout in German, as the localization still seems to be in progress. Translation seems to have been handed off to a man being paid by the sentence, and the budget came up short. The odd German word will crop up here and there, sometimes ruining but a tiny morsel of information, or simply making some unintelligible. Sadly my own skills of Deutsch only lends to asking for a "small portion of chips" and to add insult to injury, there wasn't a chip vendor in sight.

So, with the high hopes that you have a working knowledge of the German language, starting out in RoA:BoD takes you to a familiar screen of character creation. Like other dungeon crawls, a number of party members already adorn the UI, each looking at you like an embarrassed LARPer, any eye contact questioning why either of you are there, and how you should really take stock of your life.

While I understand any good RPG allows you to sculpt your best elven ears and modify the beard of your favourite dwarf, Crafty Studios somehow manage to grab the player by the foot and drag them kicking and screaming into a grim basement of dice rolls and D&D attributes. Each character must be adjusted to fit level one, with no descriptions as to what you are doing, no help, no recommendations, and a lot of the aforementioned German text mixed with the English.

So, assuming that you are "hardcore" enough to understand character creation, or simply, like me, started to play a random game of clicking boxes, it's time to adventure far and wide. Clicking to leave the temple, you then leave into the town of Thorwal.

For a game that comes bundled with the graphics option of "beautiful" RoA:BoD is ironically a particularly ugly looking game. Set somewhere between European fantasy, and an FPS circa 1998, those odd moments of nice textures are constantly underlined by waxy faced NPCs and the general glum of a developer struggling with the debut of this "3D thing".

And the performance fares no better. Optimisation seems to be skipped, perhaps in favour of the studio's "Icecream Friday" and what you are left with is an ugly piece of software that doesn't even have the good graces to at least play well.

Trudging on through the gloom, RoA:BoD doesn't actually point you in any particular direction, instead of simply toe poking you out into town and demanding a wall of silence from its inhabitants. The controls are woefully inadequate, talking to NPCs becomes a Myst-like puzzle, and then invariably the game will crash to desktop starting the process over and over again.

And if it sounds like I am describing the opening stages, I spent more than ten hours with RoA:BoD and in between stuttering around, crashing, and scratching my head, I saw almost nothing of this broken, half-finished game, spending most of my time just grappling with the client, desperately trying to inch further and further into town.

Do I sound grumpy? Perhaps, but there is no better advice to give other than stay away from this game. To sum it up as paying for beta doesn't quite cut it. The RPG simply does not work, and taking a brief glimpse at the Steam Community would portray a similar picture.

In defence of Crafty Studios, they have been proactive in patching, but Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny seems a long way off of being playable quite yet. Save your nostalgia, start learning the German language, and pray to Cromm that things turn around quickly.

Railworks 3 Train Simulator 2012 Deluxe 1 DVD

Train Simulator 2012 promises to be the most advanced train simulator in the world, with the most up to date graphics available for the PC and numerous technical innovations to create the most immersive sense of reality yet seen in a PC simulation. Every aspect of gameplay and the in-game environment is designed to make the player feel that they are controlling the locomotive.

RailWorks 2 Trainz Simulator 1 DVD

Railworks 1 DVD

Like Microsoft's much lamented Flight Simulator series -- and indeed, Microsoft's own Rail Simulator, released way back in 2001 -- Britain-based developer RailSimulator's latest ode to the choo-choo, RailWorks, is pure simulation. In other words, it authentically and in great detail depicts the operation and capabilities of real-world trains. It does not allow you to engage in head-to-head duels to the death with your buddies. It won't let you tweak your locomotive until it breathes more fire than a volcano. And it definitely won't fulfill the desires of anyone who'd like to jump the tracks and careen full-bore through the streets on a pedestrian safari.

Nevertheless, there's always a market for the sober, sim approach. There's always a market for games that let the player experience what it's really like to control an airplane. Or a motorcycle. Or a race car. Or even a boat.

Yet there's one key difference between all of the above and a train. A train is on rails. Unlike an aircraft, which can maneuver at incredible speeds in virtually any direction, or a car, which responds instantaneously to throttle and steers right or left with just a flick of the wrist, a train is a ponderous beast that goes only where the track says it can go.

If you check out discussion forums such as www.train-sim.com, where would-be engineers the world over gather to discuss the latest train games and compare notes, you'll find there's a fervent community that really digs this sort of thing. They like building new routes, adding scenery elements, coupling and de-coupling, dealing with all the nuances of making a real train do real train things, taking in the sights and sounds as they whiz through country and urban settings, and using crazily authentic devices such as the Desktop Train Cab Controller.

But know this. If you're not a train maniac, if you're not a model railroader from way back, if you're not connected -- deeply and metaphysically -- to the lore and the lure of the romantic ideals of this whole train thing, RailWorks will likely leave you flat. Real flat...like the unlucky kitty who chose the wrong time to cross the tracks.

Railway Simulator Ultimate 1 DVD

Rail Simulator will offer the opportunity for players to take charge of steam, diesel and electric trains on real routes in the UK and Germany. The game is the ultimate experience for train enthusiasts and gamers alike, allowing players to take the controls of historic and contemporary trains on more than 1,000 miles of real-life routes from around the world. New to the North American release is the highly popular Barstow to San Bernardino route alongside all-new Union Pacific locomotives and rolling stock. Rail Simulator puts players in control of every aspect of the train’s operation and even gives players a track editor to create their own routes and share them with other gamers online. Varying difficultly levels tailor the game to players of all skill levels, from Easy to Full Simulation.
